All India Radio Kargil to be inaugurated today

A satellite station and FM transmitter are to be dedicated to the people of Ladakh today at AIR Leh. The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mr.Ghulam Nabi Azad will also dedicate 200 KW High Power Transmitter at AIR Kargil to the people. The satellite station and FM transmitter were made operational in October last year on trial basis. The inaugural function will be presided over by the Chief Executive Councillor in Ladakh Autonomous Hills Development Council, Leh, Mr.Chhering Dorje. The local MLA and Commerce and Industry Minister in the State cabinet Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora, Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Mr. Thupstan Chhewang and CEO Prasar Bharati, Mr.B.S. Lalli will be present on the occasion. Our Leh correspondent reports that the satellite station will facilitate relay of programmes originating from AIR Leh through its relay centres at Khaltse, Diskit and Nyoma to reach the people in the far flung areas of Indo-Pak and India-China borders. The FM transmitter will cater to information and entertainment needs of the local population by relaying FM Rainbow programme which is very popular in Leh.

All India Radio will start broadcasting all national bulletins on its FM channel soon. Addressing the media persons after a two-day conference of CBS heads at Chandigarh Thursday, CEO of the Prasar Bharti BS Lalli said that primary function of radio is that of a public broadcaster but revenue generation has also become important with the ongoing economic growth in the country.
Mr Lalli said that the radio could emerge as best channel of mass communication by striking a balance between its services as a public broadcaster and revenue generation. Mr Lalli said that as a medium radio is potent enough to tap various new cannels of revenue generation through an innovative and professional approach. The CEO said that within another 10 years whole country would be covered under FM broadcasting which is only 35% now. During the meeting it was disclosed that maximum earning of Delhi station was credited to national news.
