Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India has signed a Grant of Permission Agreement for establishing, maintaining and operating a Community Radio Station at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Letter of intent had been issued to the Institute after recommendations of Inter Ministerial Committee for seeking requisite clearances from various Ministries. The Community Radio Station is expected to be operational within three months as per the agreement. With this, the number of CRS will increase to 63 in the country.
The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, one of the oldest such Univerisites, has rich tradition of serving the farmers, extension workers and all stakeholders who are directly or indirectly connected with farming and rural development activities through various ways of transfer of technology and people- friendly media of communication.
The Ministry encourages setting up the Community Radio Stations as it promises to provide an opportunity to the local communities to express themselves, share their views and particularly the empowerment of women. Community Radio Broadcasting focusing on child health, healthy diets, hygiene, lifestyle, bank loans, training for cottage industries to penetrate marketing, legal awareness, medical awareness etc, will be useful for the community.
